Scientists Discover Massive Magma Reservoir Beneath Tuscany

Researchers used ambient noise tomography to map a massive magma reservoir 8–15 km beneath Tuscany.

The reservoir is estimated at about 6,000 km3, showing major volcanic activity can exist without obvious surface signs.

The discovery improves understanding of hidden magmatic systems and could speed exploration for geothermal energy and critical minerals.

It may also help identify resources such as lithium and rare earth elements in regions with volcanic fluids.
