Tourette's and OCD Overlap, and a Newly Discovered Brain Link May Explain Why

Researchers at Kobe University identified a brain circuit linking the basal ganglia and insular cortex through the thalamus in a mouse model of Tourette syndrome.

Blocking the thalamus-to-insula connection reduced tic-like behavior, suggesting the pathway helps drive Tourette-related symptoms.

The finding may also help explain why Tourette syndrome often overlaps with OCD, ADHD, and autism.

The work points to more precise treatment targets for tics and related urges, including possible deep brain stimulation strategies.
