Scientists Say a Hidden Structure May Exist Inside Earth’s Core

Seismic-wave analysis suggests Earth’s inner core may contain a hidden boundary about 650 km from the center.

That would imply an additional innermost layer, making the planet’s deep interior more complex than previously modeled.

The finding, from ANU researchers led by Joanne Stephenson, could reshape ideas about Earth’s formation and cooling history.

If confirmed, it may force a rethink of core structure, including how iron crystals are arranged deep inside Earth.
