Tencent's 440 MB AI model translates 33 languages offline on your phone

Tencent open-sourced Hy-MT1.5-1.8B-1.25bit, a compact AI translation model that fits in 440 MB and runs fully offline on smartphones.

The model supports 33 languages and multiple dialects, and Tencent says it performs on translation benchmarks on par with much larger commercial and open models.

An Android demo app shows the system working on-device, reducing reliance on cloud services for translation.

The release highlights how compression and on-device AI can improve privacy, speed, and accessibility for mobile users.
