First 3D-printed drone boat below the equator unveiled for defense ops

Australia unveiled the ASTRA 460, its first 3D-printed uncrewed surface vessel for defense and maritime security missions.

The 15-foot autonomous drone boat is built with large-format additive manufacturing using recycled polymer waste.

Developed by Hyperion Systems, Versatile Marine and Greenroom Robotics, it can be produced in about 40 hours.

The vessel is aimed at surveillance, border security and reconnaissance, with sea trials expected in May 2026.
