Your Old Google Pixel Smartphone Could Be Repurposed In A Data Center

Researchers at the University of San Diego, working with Google, are testing whether discarded Google Pixel phones can be stripped down and reused as low-cost computing clusters.

Early tests show that 20 Pixel motherboards can handle education apps for a large classroom, and a 2,000-phone system is planned for launch in the fall.

The idea could cut e-waste and reduce the cost of data center capacity for schools and other users, while also lowering the carbon footprint of computing infrastructure.
