Archaeologists Uncover 5,000-Year-Old Foundations of Strange Artificial Island

Archaeologists found that the Loch Bhorgastail crannog on the Isle of Lewis was first built more than 5,000 years ago.

Underwater photogrammetry and excavation revealed submerged wooden foundations beneath the stone structure, placing its origins in the Late Neolithic.

The discovery pushes back the timeline for Scottish crannogs by thousands of years and highlights the value of new imaging methods in archaeology.
