The UK’s Answer to Darpa Wants to Rewire the Human Brain

ARIA has launched a £69 million program to develop more precise neurotechnologies that can assess and modulate brain circuits.

The agency is funding 19 teams working on approaches including ultrasound-based brain biotyping, deep brain stimulation, and ultrasound plus gene therapy.

Leaders say the research could eventually improve treatment for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The effort is also a test of whether high-risk public research funding can deliver major long-term medical returns.
