After banning foreign routers, FCC says existing ones can get updates until 2029

The FCC extended a waiver letting certain foreign-made routers and other covered devices keep receiving software and firmware updates through Jan. 1, 2029.

The waiver applies to devices that were already authorized in the U.S. before they were added to the Covered List.

FCC engineers said the update allowance helps preserve security, compatibility, and ongoing maintenance for devices already in use.

The agency also said it may seek to codify the waiver in a future rulemaking, potentially making the policy more permanent.
