Giant Alien World Found Hiding in Plain Sight for 11 Years

Astronomers using the ESO Very Large Telescope directly imaged a new exoplanet in the Beta Pictoris system, named Beta Pictoris d.

The planet was confirmed in 11 years of archival observations and is now the faintest exoplanet directly imaged from the ground.

It appeared as a very faint point of light near the known planet Beta Pictoris b in a young, nearby planetary system.

The discovery highlights the value of archival data and instruments like ERIS and SPHERE for studying planet formation and debris disks.
