Read receipts in Google Messages look different, but nobody knows why

Google Messages beta is again showing read receipts in an older style beneath messages.

The View details page still uses the newer checkmark icons, creating a mixed UI.

The inconsistency points to either a regression bug or a limited design experiment.

The behavior was spotted by users and reporters in RCS chats on Pixel devices.
