Why Are So Many New Fathers Dying? Scientists Say the U.S. Has a Dangerous Blind Spot

Northwestern researchers linked Georgia birth and death records from 2017–2022 and found 796 fathers died within five years of a child’s birth.

About 60% of those deaths were considered preventable, with causes including suicide, overdose, homicide, and accidental injury.

Fathers overall had lower death rates than non-fathers, suggesting fatherhood may offer some protection even as it marks a major public health blind spot.

The study in JAMA Pediatrics says U.S. systems are missing chances to monitor and intervene for new fathers, especially those in vulnerable groups.
