Astronomers Create Entire Synthetic Universe “Indistinguishable” From Our Own

Astronomers built the COLIBRE synthetic universe to test cosmology, and it closely matches many observed properties of real galaxies and the wider universe.

The decade-long simulation ran on Durham University’s COSMA8 supercomputer and, for the first time at this scale, modeled cold gas and dust in galaxies.

Its results strengthen confidence in the standard cosmological model by showing realistic physics can reproduce observed galaxy formation and structure.

However, the model does not yet explain JWST’s puzzling “Little Red Dots,” leaving some early-universe mysteries unresolved.
