H9N2 Bird Flu Hits Europe as First Human Case Confirmed in Italy

Italy reported Europe’s first human H9N2 case on March 25, 2026, confirmed by genetic tests.

The patient is a boy with underlying conditions who was infected outside Europe and is isolated in Monza hospital.

Italian authorities performed contact tracing and say the strain is low-pathogenic and currently poses low risk to humans.
