It has been found that 'undetectable tampering' can be embedded in DNA test files used in criminal investigations

A vulnerability was found in Thermo Fisher Scientific DNA forensic files that lets modified files still load normally in the analysis software.

Researchers used public data to alter files and even demonstrated combining results from different tests.

The issue was reported in May 2026, and Thermo Fisher disclosed it on July 31 with update guidance and operational mitigations.

Because DNA test results are used as criminal evidence, undetected tampering could seriously affect evidentiary integrity and legal proceedings.
