The largest colony of wild chimpanzees splits into two factions amid violence and killings

In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, one of the world’s largest wild chimpanzee communities split after the dominant male died.

The Ngogo chimpanzees divided into western and central groups, and since 2018 they have attacked each other as rival factions.

Researchers documented lethal violence between the two sides, marking a rare clear record of wild chimpanzee group fission turning deadly.

The findings offer important clues about primate social structure and how group conflict can escalate in natural settings.
