Scientists Scan Gigantic Structure Hiding Behind Our Galaxy

Astronomers mapped the hidden Vela Supercluster behind the Milky Way using SALT and MeerKAT observations.

The team estimates the supercluster spans about 300 million light-years and contains roughly 30 quadrillion solar masses.

The finding suggests the structure is much larger and more massive than earlier estimates.

Improving maps of hidden cosmic regions could sharpen models of the universe’s large-scale structure and evolution.
