Launching Cloudflare’s Gen 13 servers: trading cache for cores for 2x edge compute performance

Cloudflare launched Gen 13 edge servers using AMD EPYC 5th Gen Turin CPUs and its new FL2 Rust-based request stack.

Turin’s higher core counts boosted throughput, but the lower per-core cache exposed latency issues in the legacy FL1 path.

Cloudflare measured performance counters, rewrote the core path, and validated that FL2 fits the new hardware better.

The upgrade delivers about 2x higher compute performance at the edge while keeping latency targets in check.
