Zero roadkill as Amazon canopy bridges secure 15,000 crossings

A conservation project in Alta Floresta, Brazil installed eight rope canopy bridges over a highway, and camera traps recorded 15,000 arboreal crossings in 15 months.

There were zero wildlife roadkills during that period, showing the bridges can reduce deaths while restoring habitat connectivity.

The crossings help support seed dispersal, gene flow, and broader biodiversity protection in fragmented landscapes.

Brazil’s transport department has endorsed the design as a recommended national highway standard, opening the door to wider adoption.
