Japan tests ramjet engine for Mach 5 hypersonic aircraft at 1,832°F

JAXA and university partners completed a ground combustion test of a ramjet engine for an experimental Mach 5 aircraft.

The test validated thermal shielding, control surfaces, and engine performance at about 1,832°F.

The result marks progress on stable high-speed propulsion and heat management, two major hurdles for hypersonic flight.

The work could support future hypersonic aircraft, spaceplanes, and reusable spaceflight systems.
