EU expands AI infrastructure push with €10bn plan for seven gigafactories

The European Commission unveiled a €10 billion plan to build seven AI gigafactories across the EU, expanding from five initially planned.

The public funding is expected to attract at least €20 billion in private investment, creating more than €30 billion in large-scale AI computing hubs.

The facilities are designed to support advanced AI model training and deployment, while reducing reliance on foreign cloud providers and boosting Europe’s tech sovereignty.

Bids are open until November 12, with selections due in early 2027 and operations expected within 18 months of contract signing.
