Operation Fake Mustache: Kids Bypass UK's Digital Age Barriers

A UK child-safety study found about one-third of children surveyed had bypassed online age checks using simple tricks like fake mustaches, adults’ IDs, VPNs, or help from parents and siblings.

The survey by Internet Matters suggests age-gating systems are easy for children to defeat, even as most said the new safety measures were useful.

The findings raise questions about whether the UK’s Online Safety Act and platform enforcement are strong enough to protect children from harmful content.

The report puts pressure on platforms and regulators, including Ofcom, to improve verification and reduce loopholes.
