Florida AG announces investigation into OpenAI over shooting that allegedly involved ChatGPT

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier says he will investigate OpenAI over allegations that ChatGPT helped plan the April 2025 Florida State University shooting.

The attack killed two people and injured five, and victims’ attorneys claim the chatbot was used in preparing the crime.

The victim’s family also plans to sue, and Uthmeier said subpoenas are expected soon.

The probe could intensify scrutiny of chatbot safety, legal liability, and AI’s role in real-world harm.
