Japan's NTT to triple data center capacity for the AI era...targets urban areas and submarine cables at the same time

NTT said it will expand domestic data center power capacity from 300 MW in fiscal 2024 to about 1 GW by fiscal 2033.

The plan includes more distributed sites, immersion-cooling urban facilities, and a submarine-cable-linked center in Fukuoka.

NTT aims to support AI workloads, including those tied to Rapidus, as demand for compute and connectivity grows.

The move highlights how Japanese telecom and tech firms are racing to build AI infrastructure, where power, cooling, and network reach are key advantages.
