Amazonian 'Internet of the Forest' Helps Birds and Monkeys Communicate

A study in the Peruvian Amazon found that predator alarm calls spread quickly across species, with small canopy birds doing most of the relaying.

Black-fronted and white-fronted nunbirds were especially active in passing on warnings, and some monkeys also responded.

Alarm calls from the understory were less likely to spread, while nearby birds often fell silent, especially in the canopy.

The findings show the Amazon canopy functions as a rapid information network that shapes animal behavior and the rainforest soundscape.
