This startup wants to destroy cancer tumors using ultrasound instead of surgery

HistoSonics is expanding its histotripsy platform, which uses focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy tumors without surgery.

The treatment has regulatory approvals in the US and other regions and has already been used in thousands of patients.

Backed by new funding and growing attention, the company is testing the approach in additional cancers beyond liver tumors, including pancreatic and kidney cancers.

If effective more broadly, histotripsy could reduce the need for surgery and spare healthy tissue, improving recovery and outcomes.
