Steel launched as an open-source browser sandbox and API for AI agents that can automate Chrome via Puppeteer/CDP.

It supports session and proxy management, Chrome extensions, Selenium mode, and quick endpoints for scraping, screenshots, and PDFs.

The project pairs a lightweight local open-source version with a paid cloud service on steel.dev.

It aims to make browser automation easier to package as an API for scraping, testing, and other browser workflows.
