A SpaceX rocket fragment is set to crash into the Moon this Wednesday, and scientists are thrilled

A SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage, launched in January 2025 with Blue Ghost and Hakuto-R Mission 2, is set to hit the Moon on August 5.

The impact is expected near the Einstein and Bell craters, creating an ejecta plume visible to ground and space telescopes.

Scientists say the event could help calibrate lunar seismic sensors and improve understanding of how impact debris spreads.
