NASA dreamed of taking us to space like on an airplane: 15 years later, the space shuttle remains unmatched

NASA’s Space Shuttle program began in 1972 with the goal of making access to space cheaper and more routine.

It used a unique design combining an orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket boosters, then returned to Earth for a runway landing.

The shuttle carried out a wide range of missions, from satellite launches to helping build the International Space Station, but its complexity and political-budget constraints made it hard to replicate.

Atlantis’ 2011 landing in Florida ended the program and left a lasting lesson on both the promise and limits of reusable spacecraft.
