'Backrooms' is aiming for the summer horror sensation, but its origins on YouTube are already raising some doubts

A24’s horror film Backrooms is opening in the U.S. with strong box-office expectations, potentially marking the studio’s biggest debut yet.

The film grew out of Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube Backrooms shorts, inspired by a 4chan post about eerie liminal spaces.

Online rumors have questioned whether an experienced filmmaker was secretly behind it, despite Parsons having started the project at age 16.

Cast member Mark Duplass defended Parsons, saying he had full creative control on set.

The controversy highlights how internet-born IP and a very young director are still being scrutinized by Hollywood audiences.
