US plans to deploy more than 80 unmanned robotic warships to counter China’s naval dominance

The US Navy’s updated shipbuilding plan adds 83 unmanned robotic vessels by 2031, including 47 medium unmanned surface vessels and funding for extra-large underwater drones.

The plan keeps a long-term target of a 450-ship fleet and reflects a push to blend crewed warships with autonomous systems to counter China.

It also sketches future nuclear-powered battleships, but analysts question whether the program is affordable, practical, and buildable on time.
