Apple challenges UK government’s latest demand for iCloud backdoor: report

Apple has filed a complaint with the U.K. Investigatory Powers Tribunal over a secret order tied to access to encrypted iCloud backups.

The dispute follows an earlier 2025 directive that was later withdrawn; Apple then disabled Advanced Data Protection for U.K. users.

The case could help determine whether governments can compel access to end-to-end encrypted cloud data, with broad privacy implications in the U.K. and beyond.

Apple did not comment on the matter.
