US' hypersonic missile-carrying stealth destroyers to get range upgrade for long deployments

The US Navy is modernizing Zumwalt-class destroyers with added fuel capacity and better replenishment capability.

Ballast tanks will be converted into extra fuel storage to help the stealth ships stay at sea longer.

USS Michael Monsoor and other Zumwalt-class vessels will also be refit for conventional prompt strike hypersonic missiles.

The upgrades aim to boost both endurance and long-range strike power for the class.
