Apple strengthens security in Messages app with iOS 26.5, adds RCS encryption support

Apple is adding end-to-end encryption for RCS chats in the Messages app with iOS 26.5.

Users will be able to check whether encryption is enabled in Settings and in each conversation’s details.

The update strengthens security for iPhone’s default texting experience and protects more messages beyond iMessage.

The feature is currently appearing in beta, with carrier support needed for rollout.
