AI Slop Is Flooding Academic Journals. A Top Journal Measured It

Organization Science analyzed 6,957 submissions and 10,389 reviews since 2021 and found a 42% jump in submissions after ChatGPT.

Papers with heavier AI use were more likely to have weaker writing quality, raising concerns about “AI slop” in academic publishing.

AI use was detectable in more than 30% of peer reviews, and many of those reviews were rated unhelpful.

The findings suggest generative AI is increasing journal workload while making manuscript screening and peer review less reliable.
