Amazon reveals the cause of the May 2026 AWS outage

Amazon said a thermal event and power loss at one Northern Virginia AWS data center caused the May 2026 outage.

AWS rerouted traffic and restored cooling systems, bringing most affected cloud resources back online.

The incident briefly disrupted popular apps and websites, including services tied to EC2, EBS, FanDuel, and Coinbase.

The outage highlighted how a single cloud data center failure can ripple across many dependent services.
