Commodore backs down over FPGA firmware lockdown — firm stops trying to block third-party firmware installs but will stand firm against bricked modded units

Commodore reversed its planned firmware lock on the C64 Ultimate and will allow third-party FPGA firmware installs.

The company said users who install community firmware can still mod the machine, but they do so at their own risk.

Commodore will not provide free support, warranty service, or replacements for units damaged by unsupported modifications.

The move preserves retro-computing flexibility while drawing a clear line on warranty coverage.
