China’s new alloy can withstand extreme heat; could be used in reactors, hypersonic missiles

Researchers at Xi'an Jiaotong University say they developed a tantalum-based alloy that retains strength under heavy load at temperatures up to 2,400°C.

The study, published in Nature, uses a controlled microstructure to boost heat resistance and reduce deformation versus conventional high-temperature metals.

If validated outside the lab, the material could help make lighter, more durable parts for aerospace and nuclear applications.

Potential uses include rocket engines, nuclear reactors, and other systems exposed to extreme heat.
