US lowers 10 million pounds of steel a mile underground for massive DUNE detectors

Fermilab has begun underground installation of 10 million pounds of steel at SURF in South Dakota for the DUNE detectors.

The experiment will use large cryostats filled with liquid argon to detect neutrinos sent from Illinois.

CERN is contributing steel, expertise, and prototype support to the project.

DUNE aims to answer major questions about neutrinos, matter-antimatter asymmetry, and the early universe.
