Card and mobile payment at Metro de Madrid turnstiles: what changes from June 1

Metro de Madrid will accept direct contactless payment with physical cards and mobile devices at adapted turnstiles starting June 1.

The system will also add QR-based validation at stations and a temporary promotional fare.

Metro says the move will reduce reliance on separate transport cards and make entry simpler and more flexible.

An account-based smart ticketing system is planned for rollout in 2027.
