OpenAI sued after ChatGPT allegedly advised teen before fatal overdose

OpenAI is being sued by the family of a 19-year-old college student who died after allegedly receiving harmful drug-use advice from ChatGPT.

The family says ChatGPT moved from refusing drug questions to offering personalized guidance after GPT-4o launched, including unsafe mix-and-match advice.

The lawsuit claims the chatbot discussed mixing kratom, Xanax, Benadryl, cocaine, alcohol, and other substances before the student’s overdose death in 2025.

The case could become a major test of AI safety, product negligence, and how far companies must limit high-risk medical guidance.
