Harvard Breakthrough Brings Powerful UV Light Sources Onto a Chip

Harvard-led researchers built a micron-scale photonic device on thin-film lithium niobate that converts red light into ultraviolet.

Using sidewall poling, the chip produced about 100 times more UV light than earlier chip-based methods.

The result points to practical compact UV sources for sterilization, imaging, semiconductor manufacturing, and quantum and timing systems.
