Moonshot opens Kimi K3 weights — but few can run it

Moonshot AI released open weights for Kimi K3 on Hugging Face after heavy demand briefly paused new API signups.

Kimi K3 is an OpenAI-compatible 2.8-trillion-parameter MoE model built for coding and long-context work, with a 1-million-token window and native vision support.

Despite being downloadable, self-hosting is impractical for most users: the weights are about 1.4 TB and require a large distributed cluster of high-end NVIDIA GPUs.

Moonshot says K3 can rival frontier proprietary models on benchmarks, but it is slower and more sensitive to prompt ambiguity.
