Sudan Was Hiding Hundreds of Unknown Tombs of a Lost Civilization. They Have Emerged Thanks to Satellites

Satellite imagery has revealed 280 stone funerary structures in Sudan’s Atbai Desert, far more than the 20 previously known.

The tombs likely date from 4500 to 2500 BCE and contain human and cattle remains, with some showing hierarchical burials.

Researchers also identified ancient pathways linked to cattle movement, suggesting a pastoral landscape rather than an empty desert corridor.

The find reshapes views of ancient Nubia, showing the region was socially organized and adapted to changing climate.
