A building is constructed on Gunkanjima for the first time in 56 years; Shimizu Corporation’s research base and Starlink also installed

Shimizu Construction has built a new wooden facility, ‘Building 72,’ on Gunkanjima for research and evacuation use, and began operations on April 16.

The site combines solar power, Starlink, and sanitation systems to test self-sustaining facility operations on an isolated island.

The project lets Japan verify how to build and manage infrastructure on a World Heritage island while balancing preservation and use.
