9,700-ton battleship with advanced combat systems and radar sets sail ahead of commissioning

The Flight III destroyer Ted Stevens (DDG 128) has departed HII Ingalls Shipbuilding for Norfolk ahead of commissioning.

It is the second ship in the Arleigh Burke Flight III class and features the AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar and Aegis Baseline 10.

The sail-away underscores the Navy’s push for a more capable air- and missile-defense surface combatant.

The ship is named for Ted Stevens of Alaska and will later be commissioned into the U.S. Navy.
