GM just laid off hundreds of IT workers to hire those with stronger AI skills

General Motors cut more than 10% of its IT staff, or about 600 salaried employees, as it restructures its technology organization.

At the same time, GM is hiring for AI-native development, data engineering, cloud engineering, and model and agent development roles.

The shift reflects a broader push by large companies to rebuild technical teams around AI expertise, not just AI tools.

It also signals rising demand for model, data, and cloud skills as workflows are redesigned around AI.
