OpenAI and Amazon announce strategic partnership

OpenAI and Amazon announced a multi-year strategic partnership and a $50 billion Amazon investment: $15 billion upfront and $35 billion when certain conditions are met.

They will create a Stateful Runtime Environment powered by OpenAI models, offered to AWS customers through Amazon Bedrock and expected to launch in the next few months.

Stateful developer environments will be trained and optimized to run on AWS infrastructure, and OpenAI will consume 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity via AWS.

AWS will be the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier; Frontier enables organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents with shared context and governance.

OpenAI and Amazon will develop customized models to power Amazon’s customer-facing applications.
