World’s First Transplant: Man Regains Viable Sperm From His Childhood Testicle Tissue

A Brussels team reports the first case of sperm production restored from frozen childhood testicular tissue after later grafting into an adult patient.

The man had tissue preserved as a child, and a year after transplantation some grafts were making mature, motile sperm.

The sperm has not yet been found in his semen, but the result is an important proof of concept for fertility restoration.

The finding suggests prepubertal testicular tissue cryopreservation could one day help boys preserve biological parenthood options before gonadotoxic treatment.
