Target puts customers on the hook for AI shopping assistant errors

On March 22 Target updated its terms to say transactions made by a Gemini agent you authorized are treated as transactions you authorized.

Target uses a Gemini-powered AI shopping assistant that can make purchases on customers' behalf.

The terms say customers are responsible for reviewing activity by the Agentic Commerce Agent and that Target doesn’t guarantee the agent will always act as intended.

Products bought via Gemini are eligible for returns or exchanges under Target's standard return policy.

Amazon and Walmart have rolled out AI assistants (Rufus and Sparky), and Walmart warned customers to verify AI-made purchases due to possible errors.
